Testing the value of complex models with simple baselines

Complexity needs to lead to explainable gains. A reliable baseline can help determine whether the new parameters and engineering investment are worthwhile.
Establish an understandable starting point
Start with simple rules or smaller models, making the inputs, outputs, and evaluation methods clear. Baselines do not have to be advanced, but they must be stable, transparent, and capable of being run repeatedly.
Increasing complexity item by item
Only introduce important changes, such as new features or model structures, one at a time. This allows you to link performance changes to specific designs, rather than guessing at the cause among multiple variables.
Calculate maintenance costs
The comparison also takes into account running time, parameter adjustment cost, monitoring difficulty and error diagnosis. A small score increase may not be suitable for moving to the next stage if it is accompanied by a significant maintenance burden.
